In the event of an emergency cardiac arrest situation in the church, an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is located in the bride’s room in the south end of the main vestibule mounted on the wall to the right of the restroom. The school has AEDs in the gym, in the front office, and on the 3rd floor. What is an AED? AEDs are used to revive someone from sudden cardiac arrest and guide care givers until First Responders arrive. They are used when a disruption in the heart's electrical activity causes a dangerously fast heartbeat or a fast and irregular heartbeat. How to use: Have someone call 9-1-1. Retrieve and unzip the AED, open the device, power on, remove clothing over the person’s chest, and apply pads. The AED will give you step-by-step instructions explaining how to check for breathing and administer chest compressions (CPR). Once the pads are in place, the AED automatically measures the person's heart rhythm and determines if a shock is needed. If it is, the machine tells the user to stand back—”CLEAR” - and delivers the shock. The AED will not deliver a shock every time and is programmed to only shock as needed.
